The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela is a federal republic on the northern coast of South America.
Venezuela is a charter member of the UN, OAS, UNASUR, ALBA, Mercosur, LAIA and OEI. Dictator
Hugo Chavez claims to work for the people but the biggest beneficiaries of his authoritarian regime have
been friends and political cronies. Venezuela ranks 175 out of 179 countries on the Heritage Foundation’s
2011 Index of Economic Freedom thanks to diminishing freedom of labor and widespread expropriations
of private businesses.
