#5. AIDS in Africa
HIV/AIDS is a major public health concern and cause of death in many parts of Africa. 2000 began with 24 million Africans infected with the virus. In the absence of a medical miracle, nearly all will die before 2010. Each day, 6,000 Africans die from AIDS. Each day, an additional 11,000 are infected. Out of the 34
million HIV-positive people worldwide, 69% live in sub-Saharan Africa. There are roughly 23.8 million
infected persons in all of Africa.
